HELPFUL ROOFING INFORMATION

Start at the top

Inspect your roof. The National Roofing Contractors Association (NRCA) recommends you do a roof inspection at least twice a year.  Spring and fall are always a good time. The best place to start is inside your attic.
Here are a few things to look for while you are in the attic.  (don't forget your flashlight)

1) Places where the roof  is bending.
2) Signs of a water leak or water damage.
3) Discolored spots.

Check the outside next!

When you look at the  roof, pay special attention to  missing shingles, wrinkling, swelling, buckling, rotting and clogged gutters.

4) Walk the roof and look for loose material around chimneys, vents, pipes or skylights.
5)Excessive amount of shingle granules (they look like large grains of sand) in the gutters is a sign of advanced wear.
6) Check for signs of moisture, rot or mold.
7) Examine the drainage, and make sure gutters and downspouts are securely attached. Also ensure all drains are open and allow water to exit, and all gutters and downspouts are free of leaves and excess granules.
8) Check that all vents.

Don't wait for water to  unexpectedly start pouring into your home. Start protecting your home by using some simple observation skills. If you find problems, it doesn't necessarily mean you need to replace your roof. Many repairs can be done if you catch it in time.
